• Description: Provides weekly financial benefits for covered employees who cannot work due to a medically certified illness or injury and who are not covered under Worker's Compensation. Workers covered by SDI are covered by 2 programs: Disability Insurance (DI) and Paid Family Leave (PFL). The DI program provides short-term benefits to eligible workers who suffer a loss of wages when they are unable to work due to a non work-related illness or injury, or due to pregnancy or childbirth. The PFL program covers workers who suffer a loss of wages when they need to take time off from wok to care for an ill child, spouse, parent, registered domestic partner, or to bond with a new child.

• Eligibility: Disability is defined as any mental or physical illness or injury which prevents a worker from performing regular or customary work. This includes elective surgery; illness or injury resulting from pregnancy, childbirth, or related conditions; or inability to work due to a written order of quarantine from a state or local health officer.
